Lesser Known Dictator Douches
Lately we have all heard a lot about the Dictator Muammar Gaddafi in Libya and how he is being a real douche to his people. But there have been quite a few other dictators in recent years who didn’t kill quite as many people but who enacted some seriously douchey policies. My personal favorite is Saparmurat Niyazov, the former Dictator of Turkmenistan who died in 2006.
As you can probably guess, Turkmenistan is not a rich country. So what did he do as Dictator? He commissioned a solid gold statue of himself that rotates to always face the sun of course. This guy takes the cake for pure self promoting douchebaggery. I mean just look at this thing:
What are Niyazov’s other achievements that secured his status as a Douchey Dictator?
- He banned dogs, he didn’t like how they smelled.
- He banned car radios, they annoyed him.
- He banned going to the ballet, opera or the circus, too “girly” I guess.
- He banned growing beards.
- He made his autobiography mandatory reading for the whole country.
- He embezzled somewhere in the neighborhood of $3billion before he died.
- He closed all hospitals and libraries outside of the capital, “what too sick to walk?”
- And as if that wasn’t enough, he also renamed the months of year after himself and members of his family.
But on the plus side, he did ban lip-syncing at concerts. So a word of warning to Ashlee Simpson: Don’t do any concerts in Turkmenistan!
So maybe it was all worth it?
